Vehicle-Miles Traveled by Cars in the United States, 1960-2005
The amount of vehicle-miles traveled by cars has grown substantially in the United States at a rate which is much faster than population growth. While the population has grown by 62.6% (180.7 to 293.9 million) between 1960 and 2004, the amount of vehicle-miles surged by 190.3%. The main factor behind this acute divergence in growth rates is linked with a higher level of car ownership as well as a growth in the average distance traveled.
