Cities are important drivers of the global commercial activity since they are locations where decisions are made in terms of investment and the management of trade flows. They are also conductive of innovation, have a strong institutional setting, high productivity and high wages. The most important consumer markets are also found in prominent commercial centers. The Worldwide Centers of Commerce Index evaluates 75 cities across seven dimensions (legal and political framework, economic stability, ease of doing business, financial flows, transport and business infrastructures, innovation and livability) consisting of 43 indicators. It underlines that city specific data tends to be more relevant than country level data. While Europe and North America continues to dominate the commercial landscape, the commercial relevance of centers in the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia is increasing.
