I received my degree from Columbia University in 1981, and have been a member of the faculty at Hofstra University for about 24 years. Between 1994 and 2000 I served as Chairperson of the Department of Sociology & Anthropology. My research interests have been in the areas of organizations, work relations and the labor process, housing policy, and racial segregation in the suburbs. I teach courses in statistics, research methodology, social theory, race relations, and the sociology of work. Both my teaching and research have been influenced by my concern for social justice and interest in the processes of social change. My principal focus as a teacher has been to help my students develop the intellectual and communicative skills that will enable them to think critically about social issues, to be able to look beyond the "taken for granted" aspects of social life, and to dare the ruthless criticism of everything existing.
