Directions to Big Brook Fossil Locality, New Jersey from Long Island

Cretaceous shark teeth and other vertebrate fossils can be sieved from the stream gravels at this locality. Also, shelly fossils such as brachiopods and oysters can be found weathering out of the sediments downstream from the bridge. Microfossils are found in the sediments that contain shelly fossils. For sieving you will need a screen box with 1 cm square or smaller mesh and a shovel.

Take Belt Parkway to the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. Across Staten Island, I287 west to exit for Outerbridge Crossing, Rt 440 south.

Outerbridge Crossing to New Jersey. Stay on 440 to exit for Garden State Parkway South.

Garden State Parkway south, through toll booths (stay in Local lanes to the right after toll booth). Take exit 123 for Rt 9 south (‘sprung from cages on highway 9...’).

Rt 9 south to exit for Rt 18 south (left exit).

Rt. 18 south to exit for Rt. 79 north.

Rt. 79 north app. 2 miles to Rt. 520 (intersection with shopping plaza at NE corner.

Right onto Rt. 520, go east app. 1 mile - at top of little hill, turn right onto Boundary Road (be warned, it comes up fast and the road to the left has a different name).

Go right onto Boundary Road, follow road about 1.5 miles to the bridge.

Park on left side, far side of bridge, walk down to stream.

Outerbridge Crossing to New Jersey. Stay on 440 to exit for Garden State Parkway South.

Garden State Parkway south, through toll booths to Exit 109 (Rt. 520, Holmdel).

Exit GSP, pay toll. Turn right onto Rt. 520 (west). Take 520 west app. 7 - 8 miles, passing through the small town of Holmdel (about halfway).

Look for Boundary Rd, left at top of small hill. The road to the right has a different name, so look carefully.

Go left onto Boundary Road, follow road about 1.5 miles to the bridge.

Park on left side, far side of bridge, walk down to stream.
