Liora Pedhazur Schmelkin has been at Hofstra University since 1979 – as a professor in the Department of Counseling, Research, Special Education & Rehabilitation (CRSR) and in the Department of Psychology. She also served as Chair of the CRSR Department and as Director of the Center for Teaching and Scholarly Excellence. Dr. Schmelkin joined the Provost’s Office in 2003 as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and has been the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean of Graduate Studies at Hofstra University since 2006. She is also the Leo A. Guthart Distinguished Professor in Teaching Excellence and a Professor of Psychology. Her areas of specialization include statistics, research design and measurement. Her current scholarly interests focus on graduate education, academic integrity, faculty evaluation, and the effective teaching of methodology courses.

As a distinguished educator and scholar she has received multiple awards and recognitions (at the local and national level) for her teaching, scholarship, mentoring and service. Her coauthored textbook (with Elazar J. Pedhazur), Measurement, Design and Analysis: an Integrated Approach, is used internationally and her other publications have appeared in such journals as Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, Basic and Applied Social Psychology, Cancer, Exceptional Children, Journal of Behavioral Medicine, Journal of Higher Education, Journal of Psychiatric Education, Journal of Special Education, Rehabilitation Psychology, and Research in Higher Education.

Dr. Schmelkin’s professional activities and affiliations include being past President of Division 5 (Evaluation, Measurement & Statistics) of the American Psychological Association (APA) and past President of the Northeastern Educational Research Association. Her board and committee work include being a current member of the TOEFL Board, past chair of the Educational Testing Service GRE Board, and past membership on the Technical Advisory Committee for the GRE, Board of Scientific Affairs of the APA, and the SAT Committee of the College Board. She is a Fellow of the APA and the American Educational Research Association. She has also worked with many Long Island, N.Y. school districts providing professional development for teachers and administrators on education and research issues.
