FAQ Does your program provide for part-time students?
Yes. Our program recognizes that some students need to attend on a part-time basis. There is no distinction between full-time and part-time students. Everyone takes classes together.

FAQ What is the make-up of the student body?
Some students have not attended school for many years and are changing careers. Some have completed their BA or BS recently. Others are international students. We encourage prospective students to explore their own needs and proceed with advisement.

FAQ I just heard about art therapy and I do not have all the requirements to enter the program. What should I do?
Under these circumstances it is best to obtain your transcripts and discuss your options with the Program Director. You may do this on the phone or in person. Often students may begin the program while completing the undergrad prerequisites. Each situation is different and is determined at the time of a meeting with the Director.

FAQ Do you have classes in the summer?
Hofstra has 3 summer sessions and a January session. Elective courses are often taken during these times. Required courses are generally offered during the fall or spring, although that does change yearly.

FAQ When do I have to decide which program I want to enter?
If you are unsure of your needs, you may start the Creative Arts Therapy Program (MA) and finalize your program during the first year. Since core courses are required for all the programs you would begin with those and not an elective.

FAQ What is the deadline for sending in the application?
Hofstra operates on a rolling admission.

FAQ What should I include in the portfolio?
Include a variety of media you have explored and some of your favorite pieces. You may send them in slides or you may bring your artwork in a portfolio at he time of the interview.

FAQ Why did I choose Art Therapy as a career?
“I have always been interested in psychology. In addition, I have been an artist for several years. I found working in advertising very unsatisfying. When I heard about art therapy, I know I had found a career that would provide me with the intellectual and creative stimulation I needed, as well as providing a n0n-traditional therapeutic method for people in need.” - Sheryl Stern, ATR-BC
