The Masters of Arts Degree in Creative Arts Therapy is designed to provide students with the educational preparation to qualify as a licensed Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT) in the state of New York. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a critical knowledge base comprised of content areas that have been identified by NYS Education Department. These content areas are in compliance with Article 163 of the Educational Law, which establishes Creative Arts Therapy as a licensed profession in New York State. Our 53 credit program, currently approved by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA), prepares graduates to work effectively in hospitals, agencies, rehabilitation centers, adult facilities, day treatment centers, mental health centers and schools. Graduates work with individuals who have experienced illness, trauma, addictions, changes in living, and those who seek personal development. This program is the first step that students take toward achieving Creative Art Therapy licensure.
This Creative Arts Therapy Master’s Degree includes electives so that during the program students can study in related interest areas such as: gerontology, special education, counseling, marriage and family or expressive therapies (drama, dance, movement, play, poetry, music).
The Creative Art Therapy program is designed as an application-oriented experience aimed at building knowledge and skills essential for Creative Arts Therapists. Perspective students with a BA degree can complete this curriculum in 2 years. However, part time students and non-matriculated students are accepted and will have an individualized plan of study upon advisement with the director. Undergraduate prerequisites may be taken concurrently during the first year of Master’s study.
Admission Requirements:
1. Completion a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum grade-point average of 2.8;
2. Have completed 12 semester hours in psychology (including: developmental, personality theories and abnormal);
3. Have completed 18 hours in studio art (including: drawing, painting and three dement ional art);
4. Show competency in art by presenting a, slides, original artwork, CD presentation.
5. Have a personal interview with the program director;
6. Three letters of recommendation from education and professional sources.
7. Personal statement.
