Research Interests

My research is at the interface of personality psychology, social psychology, and the psychology of emotion. My primary interest is in the psychology of gratitude. I am mainly interested in the well-springs, assessment, outcomes, and enhancement of gratitude in children and adolescents and am particularly excited about studying the relation between gratitude and well-being. I am a former Associate Editor for The Journal of Positive Psychology. My research has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and other media outlets.

Favorite Book Quote

G.K. Chesterton (1908): Orthodoxy

“Children are grateful when Santa Claus puts in their stockings gifts of toys or sweets. Could I not be grateful to Santa Claus when he put in my stockings the gift of two miraculous legs? We thank people for birthday presents of cigars and slippers. Can I thank no one for the birthday present of birth?” (p. 60)
