Outline

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used to encode, store, analyze, and report spatial data. This course expands the GIS foundations, concepts, and application techniques already acquired in the introductory course (GEOG 60: Introduction to Geographic Information Systems). It mainly focuses upon the professional applications of the GIS technology as well as the understanding of more advanced spatial analysis functions such a digitizing, geocoding, classification, and overlay analysis. The student is expected to become proficient in applying GIS for the analysis of problems in a wide array of fields.

The general goals of the course are:

Providing intermediate GIS conceptual knowledge.
Acquiring intermediate GIS application skills.
Expand the proficiency for GIS tasks such as digitizing, geographic database management, thematic mapping and spatial analysis.
Mastering the usage of the ArcMap GIS software for professional and scientific purposes.

Dr. Rodrigue's research interests mainly cover the fields of transportation and economics as they relate to logistics and global freight distribution. Area interests involve North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, and East and Southeast Asia. Specific topics over which he has published extensively cover maritime transport systems and logistics, global supply chains and production networks, gateways and transport corridors.
