Modal Split for Global Cities, 1995
Dense cities, which also tend to be older (such as Western European cities), are generally more transit oriented, while younger cities (namely American and Australian) tend to rely more on the automobile as the major mode for urban travel. In developing countries, cycling and walking are dominant modes, obviously because of their low costs and the lack of modern transport infrastructures.
