Home-to-Work Commute Profile, United States, 1983-2003

Home-to-work commuting profiles underline that the length, time and speed of commuting are increasing, particularly after 1995. This reflects a society caught in a vicious circle of congestion where growing accessibility levels have resulted in longer trips as well as of a longer duration of those trips. In several large American cities, a process of space / time divergence is taking place, implying that a growing amount of time must be spend to travel a similar distance.
