The Port of Montreal, 1996

The above figure shows the facilities and functional patterns for 1996. It is worth comparing this map with that of 1971. Nearly all the container facilities have been established down river, close to the first terminal shown on the map of 1971, some 10 km from the old harbor. They now dominate the port area, just as container traffic dominates port functions. The Upper Harbor itself has been largely transformed. Although there is still some bulk and container activity taking place there, most of the area has been vacated by the port and is now the Vieux Port, an area of public open space and activities. A further area of change is the section of shoreline between the container facilities and the oil terminals. Originally vacant land this has been converted to a waterfront park, the Promenade Bellerive. Only the mid section of the port, on either side of the Jacques Cartier bridge, a general cargo area with some bulk facilities, along with the oil terminals in the extreme east of the port remain unchanged.
