THE GEOGRAPHY OF TRANSPORT SYSTEMS

Source: UNCTAD, Review of Maritime Transport.
In 2001, the global a container fleet was just above 15 million TEU. In just six years it grew by 10 million TEU to reach 28 million TEU in 2008. Then as an outcome of the financial crisis of 2008-10 and its corresponding drop in international trade, the global container fleet declined. An important trend has been the growing share of maritime shipping companies, from 55% in 2001 to 62% in 2009. The main reason behind this trend is the growing role of maritime shipping companies in global transport chains.
