Rail System Mileage Within the United States,
1960-2002Through modal competition and deregulation, a number of rail segments have
been shut down in the United States since the 1960s, with the system losing about
half its length over a 40 years period. Urban rail transportation has experienced
a growth, adding more than 1,500 miles of tracks over a 15 years period.
