Modal Shift in China, 1980-2005

China represents an excellent example of modal shift brought by a fast process of economic growth, both for its passengers and freight sectors. For passengers, the road and air modes have experienced the most significant gain in market share. Considering the extensive fluvial and canal networks and the prominence of passengers for rail transportation, it is the road and water transport modes that have gained the most.
