BTS, Transportation Statistics Annual Report.
Since the 1970s, trade with the United States have been an increasingly important driver of economic growth for Canada and Mexico. Moreover, freight transport between Canada and the United States has become the number one growth factor in the road freight industry, creating a situation of dependency. With the setting of NAFTA in 1994, surface trade between Canada, the United States and Mexico has increased substantially. While the value of truck trade between Canada and the United States has doubled, the one between Mexico and the United States has quadrupled. Although trade figures between Canada and Mexico are far more modest, road freight traffic for both imports and exports have also known remarkable increases.
