Route Selection to Minimize Walking Time

This photo is a living proof of the intrinsic effort minimizing behavior of human beings, notably among students. Even if a sidewalk already exists, the shortest solution to cross a campus quad is used when available.  However, this behavior comes at the expense of the lawn, which is this case gets tramped to exhaustion.
