Associate Professor of Art History
Hofstra
University
I received a B.A. From Yale University and a PhD. from the University of California at Berkeley, both in art history, and have taught at Hofstra since 1995. I have also taught at UCLA, SUNY Albany, School of Visual Arts, Pratt Institute, and Parsons School of Design. My specialization is seventeenth-century Dutch art, but I also teach surveys of western art, the work of women artists, courses in visual culture and art historical method, and courses based on sites in and around New York City. I'm also interested in history of costume and the history of film: American and German cinema in particular, film adaptations of literature, and the history of production design and art direction.
My book, An Entrance for the Eyes: Space and Meaning in Seventeenth-Century Dutch Art, was published by University of California Press.
I have been writing and publishing poetry since 1976. My publications include The Game of Statues (Atlantic Monthly Press, 1990), periodicals such as The New Republic, The Paris Review, The Southwest Review and Partisan Review, and several anthologies. I'm a member of the US writers' organization PEN American Center as well as the Academy of American Poets.
Finally, I have the privilege of participating regularly in New York's rich musical life through membership in the Dessoff Choirs, where I have been singing since 1993.
