Library, Journal, and Resource Links:
- For Hofstra Students and Faculty
Many research databases, including those that provide full-text of articles and books, are available for the Hofstra community. These may be accessed from the Hofstra University Libraries home page (select Research Databases). For off-campus (remote) access, you will be asked to provide your Novell Network Username and Password.
- General Information
Although access to on-line books and journals varies by institution,
there are many services available to help locate such resources. In addition
to what is available at such sites as the Library
of Congress and Ingenta,
many universities have institutional subscriptions to services like EBSCO Information Services, Proquest, JSTOR (archives of selected
scholarly journals), and Project MUSE.
Individuals at these institutions have access to these services. Even
if your institution does not subscribe to these services, you may be able
to login as a "guest" and browse the tables of contents and abstracts
and even sample some issues. Other sources are journal web sites (e.g.,
APA Journals), where on-line
abstracts, tables of contents, and sample articles and issues are frequently
available. There are services that offer free e-mail notification of tables of contents from many different publishers. In addition, some journal publishers offer their own e-mail notification of the tables of contents of the journals they publish. Further, depending on the publisher, print subscribers may have access to full-text articles
on-line. Resources can also be located through searches provided by such
organizations as ERIC -- Educational Resources Information Center and its
various clearinghouses.

Searching the Web:
The following sites provide some suggestions and directions of how to conduct searches efficiently.
Single Search Engines:
Search engines use different strategies in conducting their searches. Consequently, it is important to use several search engines when conducting a search.
Meta Search Engines:
Rather than using several single site search engines one at a time, another strategy is to use a meta search engine that searches several sites simultaneously. Some, like Copernic, save the results of the search, enabling easy access at a later date.
Human Guide Searches:
Some sites have expert guides that collect links to appropriate sites.
