Melville Society Extracts |
Created by Hennig Cohen in 1969 and then edited from 1978 to 1990 by Donald Yannella, Melville Society Extracts was the society's house organ until it ceased independent publication in 2005. It now appears as a separate department in each issue of Leviathan. A rich resource of Melville scholarship, Extracts, like its successor, Leviathan, was devoted to the study of the life, works, and influence of Herman Melville, and included book reviews, abstracts of papers, and society news. It began as an occasional newsletter and grew into a quarterly in 1972 (issues #10-115). Under the editorship of John Bryant (beginning in 1990), it also published critical essays, interviews, special issues, and international conference supplements. With the creation of Leviathan in 1999, Melville Society Extracts was circulated until 2005 as a semiannual publication, edited and produced by Associate Editor Wyn Kelley, who continues to edit the Extracts department in each issue of Leviathan.

ISHMAIL. In March, 1994, the Melville Society sponsored ISHMAIL, an on-line discussion group open to all individuals — academics, students, and enthusiasts — with an interest in Melville. After eleven years of vibrant service, this "listserv" was discontinued in October, 2005. The Melville Society's Executive Committee and Editor hope that a managed list for research and classroom interaction — Call it Ishmail2 — will be established in the near future. Until then, readers can find a Melville discussion group (Ishmailites) through Google Groups.
