HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY GEOLOGY 2C FIELD TRIP

Geology of Southeastern New York

Saturday, April 29, 2006

Depart 8:00 AM, Gittleson Hall, Return 6:00 PM

Itinerary:

We will be traveling by bus to the Wallkill Valley and Shawangunk Ridge in the vicinity of New Paltz, New York.  Along the way we will pass through several major geologic provinces of the New York region.

The majority of the day will be spent at Minnewaska State Park where we will be able to observe the regional geology of southeastern New York from a eagle-eye vantage.  We will cover about three miles hiking in the park where we will take a close look at Silurian sandstones and conglomerates, Ordovician shales, glacial features, and make various observations related to weathering and erosion.

What to Bring

§       Comfortable walking shoes (sneakers at the very least, preferably hiking shoes)

§       Umbrella (just in case)

§       Water

§       Lunch and snacks (the only opportunity to buy food will be early in the day at the Sloatsburg rest area.)

§       Camera and notepad (if you want to take advantage of the photoessay option).

§       Backpack (to carry it all in and to carry your trash out – there are no trash cans in the park)
