RELI 140 Sex & the Body in Religion This course will introduce you to the major contemporary theoretical moves which scholars use to ponder the force of sexuality and the body in religion. In the last two weeks, we will practice using these theorists as lenses for analyzing a sampling of texts that record Daoist meditation practices.

	Dr. Burlein is new to Hofstra. She comes to us with ten years of experience teaching full-time, first at Meredith College in Raleigh North Carolina and then at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Burlein earned her Ph.D. from Duke University; she also holds an M.A. from the University of Chicago and her B.A. from St. John's College in Annapolis Maryland (which is a tiny innovative college which gave no grades -- ask her about it!).
			Dr. Burlein's work focuses on contemporary religion and the body, particularly sexuality. Her first book (pictured left) was a comparative study of the largest white supremacist minister in the contemporary U.S. and one of the largest Religious Right media ministries in the contemporary U.S. Her current work follows two paths. She is working on religion and medicine, particularly molecular medicine. She is also working on a book about theorist Michel Foucault, focusing on how his innovative practice of history viewed religion and the body, primarily in terms of his analysis of shame.
