About Alan

Alan Singer has a Ph.D. in U.S. history from Rutgers University. In Hofstra University's School of Education and Allied Human Services, he is a professor of secondary education and the director of social studies education. Singer is a former New York City high school social studies teacher and is editor of Social Science Docket, a joint publication of the New York State and New Jersey Councils for the Social Studies. He is also the author of Social Studies for Secondary Schools (Lawrence Erlbaum and Associates, 2nd edition, 2003) and editor of a 268-page secondary school curriculum guide, New York and Slavery: Complicity and Resistance.

Lower Manhattan Slavery in New York Walking Tour. Bring classes (grades 4 through 12) to a free 2-hour walking tour starting at 1 Police Plaza at 11:00 am. At each site along the tour route, students from Law, Government and Community Service High School will perform and present historical information based on the “New York and Slavery: Complicity and Resistance” curriculum guide (http://www.nyscss.org).
