OVERVIEW OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: identify the major components of a computer; understand the von Neumann architecture of computers; explain the major classes of software; use and design algorithms; know why algorithms are important in computer science; design and implement interactive web pages; identify some of the historical and evolutionary developments of computers; show awareness on how computers affect society; know some of the theoretical and practical limitations of computers.
Approximately 50% of the course will consist of hands-on lab work.
Attendance will be taken every day and is very important.
A term paper will be required with a minimum length of 5 typed pages (double spaced). Topics will be suggested by the instructor but the student can choose his own with the instructor's approval. Term paper is due on the last day of class.
There will be 4 quizzes which will be announced in advance.
Final exam will be given during finals week.
The final grade will be based on:
25% = homework, lab assignments and ATTENDANCE
25% = quiz average
25% = final
25% = term paper
Homework is due on Mondays. (Homework is announced and posted on the instructor's web site.)
All Homework must be submitted via electronic mail to the instructor.
Lab work is to be saved on your floppy disk (a:\) and will be printed and collected by instructor.
The instructor's web site should be checked periodically. It will provide homework and lab assignments as well as other important course information.
