Estimated Probability

This applet requires a Java-capable browser. The applet simulates the experiment of casting two dice, and computes the estimated probability that the sum (red + green) is 7.

To cast the die, just press the corresponding button.

• "Sample Size" is the number of times the dice were cast (since the last reset).
• "x" is the sum of the numbers facing up.
• "fr(x=7)" is the frequency of the event that x = 7 (the total number of times the sum was 7)
• "P(x=7)" is the estimated probability (or relative frequency) that the outcome x is 7.

Pressing the "Reset" button starts the experiment over again.

You will see later in the tutorial that the theoretical probability that x=7 is 1/6 = 0.1666... The estimated probability should approach this number as the sample size gets large. You can now verify this experimentally.
