| Leviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies |
LEVIATHAN appears three times a year in March, June, and October. We welcome articles, notes, reviews, and creative writing on the life, works, and influence of novelist and poet Herman Melville (1819-1891). First appearing in 1999, Leviathan was created by John Bryant and is edited by him with the assistance of Associate Editor, Wyn Kelley. The journal is open to all scholarly, critical, and pedagogical approaches, and regularly publishes interviews, book reviews, and Special Issues. Also, featured in each issue (beginning in 2006 with Volume 8) is Extracts, a department devoted to Melville Society news, programs, Cultural Project activities, and other relevant information. LEVIATHAN is published under the auspices of Wiley Blackwell, with generous support from Hofstra University.
HENNIG COHEN PRIZE. Each year the Melville Society's Cohen Prize Committee honors an essay or book chapter that demonstrates excellence in scholarship and writing by an individual relatively new to the field. For further details, visit the Cohen Prize page.
LEVIATHAN appears in hard copy (for members) and electronically for institutions subscribing to Wiley Blackwell's American Literature Collection, a consortium of five American author journals. Members of the Melville Society receive an annual subscription to Leviathan (both in hard copy and electronically) as part of their $25 annual dues.
SUBMISSIONS: Individuals may submit essays, notes, or creative writing for possible publication in Leviathan to the Editor, John Bryant, through Leviathan's PowerReview online editorial office. To reach PowerReview, paste the following URL into your browser:

New users will be asked to register and will be assigned a permanent "author site" within PowerReview in which contributors will submit material, revisions, copy-edited text, and proof sheets.
Along with critical interpretation, we welcome manuscript, textual, and bibliographical analysis, interviews with current writers, artists and performers, pedagogical studies, and suggestions for Special Issues. Queries concerning publication should be directed by e-mail to the Editor or Associate Editor. Book reviews are assigned and edited by the Associate Editor, Wyn Kelley; queries regarding the reviewing of books may be directed to her. Melville Society and Melville-related news items for publication in the Extracts department of Leviathan may be directed to the Associate Editor as well.
MANUSCRIPTS: Articles (ranging from 6,000 to 7,000 words) should follow the former MLA style in which citations appear first in footnote form with subsequent references appearing parenthetically in the text (not the "works cited" approach).
