One of the main contemporary challenges involves the emergence of a new global economic space. Globalization, a term often imprecisely used to describe a set of complex processes, such as the mutation of industrial functions, market growth, and the synchronism of financial centers, is unavoidable and irreversible. In this abundantly illustrated book, the author describes and explains the dimensions and challenges of the global economy, notably the formation of economic blocs, international trade, capital flows, international transportation and large industrial and financial corporations. A particular attention is placed upon advanced economies, including those of North America, Western Europe, Japan and the new industrialized economies of Pacific Asia. His pragmatic approach underlines the implacable logic of the main actors of globalization, often evolving over a geographical space external to the constraints of states. This book was awarded the 2000 PricewaterhouseCoopers best business book award by the "Ordre des administrateurs agréés du Québec" (ADMA).

Dr. Rodrigue's research interests mainly cover the fields of economic, transport and urban geography. Area interests involve East and Southeast Asia (particularly China) and North America, notably concerning transportation, distribution and trade issues. Specific topics cover transport systems and logistics, global supply chains and production networks, gateways and transport corridors, urban regions, economic integration, international trade and regional development.
