PSYCH 283A: Fundamentals of Industrial/Organizational Study-1

Course Objectives: The primary objective of this course is to provide a general introduction to the major topics in the field of Industrial Psychology. Current and historical perspectives will be discussed.

: Riggio, R. (2000). Introduction to Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Prentice Hall, 3rd ed.

Grading: There will be one midterm (30 points) and one final (30 points). An unexcused missed examination will receive a score of 0. There is one written assignment that should be written according to the APA guidelines. The paper is worth 20 points. One point will be deducted for each day the paper is late. Research on a pre-approved topic will be reviewed in the paper. Students will present this work in class. Students will work in groups of two or three in reviewing the research, making the presentation, and in writing the paper. Students will also be responsible for completing a job analysis during the course (5 points). The final 15 points comes from class participation and the class presentation.

PSYCH 284: Personnel Selection

: Gatewood, R. D. & Feild, H. S. (1998). Human Resources Selection. The Dryden Press. (4th edition).

Grading: There will be six quizzes each worth 10 points (total of 60 points). These will be administered at the beginning of class. An unexcused missed examination will receive a score of 0. There is one written assignment that should be written according to the American Psychological Association guidelines. The paper is worth 20 points and is due the last day of the class. One point will be deducted for each day the paper is late. Research on a pre-approved topic will be reviewed in the paper. Students will present this topic in class. The focus of the paper and the class presentation should be on a particular selection tool (e.g., BIB, Interviews, Assessment Centers, Work Samples, Ability tests, Personality inventories, Integrity tests). Students will work in pairs in reviewing the research and making the presentations. As part of this work, students will develop appropriate items for this selection tool in conjunction with the project for Psych 203. The paper will include a literature review as well as the outline of the steps taken in item development. This should be presented in the form of a test manual. The final 20 points are based on the class presentation and class participation.

Aim of the Course
: The aim of the course is to teach the conduct of psychological enquiry. Emphasis will be given to experimentation-- to how experiments are designed, carried out, and reported.

Format
: The morning meetings will be in lecture form. Topics will include such basic issues as the ways in which knowledge is gained; the observational and experimental modes of science; and basic experimental designs. Meanwhile the afternoon meeting will be given over to in-class experiments and to the discussion of selected cases.

Requirements
: Students are expected to attend all of the meetings- lectures and laboratory sessions. Students are permitted no more than two absences per semester. Any absence over that will result in points of the final grade (1 point per absence to a maximum of 5 points). Students who are more than 10 minutes late to a class will be marked absent. Students are also expected to write-up one in-class experiment. There will be two examinations.

Each examination will be worth 30 points. An unexcused missed examination will receive a score of 0. The paper will be worth 40 points. One point (of 7) to be deducted for each day the paper is late.
