Children and Schools

Spring 2001, Session III
SPG 24(4 s.h.)

Seminars

Beginning January 29 through Feb. 6 (Tuesday) we shall be meeting for classes here at Hofstra. We shall be reading and discussing material on child development and educational psychology as well as information about observation and your participation. On Thursday February 8 you will begin your observation-participation in the school to which you have been assigned. Your required to observe for a minimum of 6 hours/week as indicated above. Each week, beginning February 13 we shall meet at Hofstra for a weekly seminar. At this time we will discuss the reading assignment and you will turn in an observation-reaction to your week in the schools. Attendance at these classes is required. Credit will be lost for excessive absences.

Fieldwork Paper

A major requirement for this class is a fieldwork paper summarizing and discussing your 30 hours of observation. To that end, you will be required to bring in a written account of your notes and comments each week for the seminar. Make sure that you have these ready to turn in when we meet for seminar. These papers, which I shal;l return with comments, will provide a basis for your final field work paper, which will be 40% of your grade.

Exams

It is vital that you read the assigned material in advance of each seminar class. These readings are meant to be spread over the week that you are observing. Don't save them for the night before and do get them read. If I discover that the class is not keping up I will be forced to give a mid-term. I hope that this is not necessary.

Class participation

Bring your text book to class and as I stated above, do the readings assigned for that week. Your seminar attendance and participation will count 10% of your grade, but if your attendance at fieldwook or seminar is extensive then you will loose points from your grade and in serious cases you will receive a DE for your grade, even if you take the final examination.

Fieldwork

You will be required to a total of 30 hours of fieldwork for this course. If you need to be absent from fieldwork, notify the school and make-up the time.
