Dr. Bernard J. Firestone is Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. Appointed as Dean in July 1998, Dr. Firestone previously served as Interim Dean (1997-98) and before that as Associate Dean for Curriculum and Personnel (1990-97).

Dr. Firestone received a B.A. degree from Yeshiva University in June 1970 and M. Phil. and Ph.D. degrees from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in 1979. Appointed as Instructor of Political Science at Hofstra University in September 1976, Dr. Firestone was promoted to the position of Professor of Political Science in January 1994, a rank he holds today. In 1987, he was awarded the University’s Distinguished Teaching Award for excellence in teaching.

A specialist in International Relations and the American presidency, Dr. Firestone is the author of The Quest for Nuclear Stability: John F. Kennedy and the Soviet Union and editor of Lyndon Baines Johnson and The Uses of Power and Gerald R. Ford and the Politics of Post-Watergate America. His recent article on Kennedy’s national security policy was published in Kennedy and Europe, edited by historian Douglas Brinkley. Dr. Firestone’s latest book, From East West to North South: The United Nations in the 1960s, which was published by Scarecrow Press in 2001.
